Chelsea and Westminster Hospital adds to calls for bigger changes in RBKC

Since we wrote to RBKC about the increased urgency of changes in our borough’s streets we have seen some action, and some promises of more to come – 20mph limits and a safe cycle route bringing life back to Kensington High Street among them. Thank you to all who have made those happen. But as we know RBKC had a huge […]

It’s time to fix Kensington High Street

Lockdown is easing, and the traffic is coming back. Kensington High Street hasn’t been the flagship destination it should be for years and years. Now it’s back to being a traffic despositary that people visit only reluctantly. It’s time to fix this. In fact according to some studies, traffic is coming back worse than before, with […]

Covid-19, clean air and safe streets

Covid-19 already has changed our travel needs and possibilities. It’s also meant our air is – for now at least – cleaner. We’ve written to RBKC to suggest transport policies to allow safe travel and keep our air clean. Open letter to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea 1st May, 2020 Dear Councillors Campbell and […]

Bikes for NHS staff

Jonathan Kelly is a local resident, a co-founder of Better Streets for Kensington & Chelsea and Divisional Manager of Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew Hospital. He’s helped and encouraged his staff to cycle to work during the coronavirus crisis and he’s also been instrumental in Brompton’s scheme to loan bikes to NHS staff across […]

Support grows for a safer RBKC

While most people are focused on saving lives in the current pandemic, yesterday MP for Kensington Felicity Buchan revealed she’d been spending her time rather differently. She released an extraordinary and long open letter opposing the road safety scheme on Holland Park Avenue and Notting Hill Gate on multiple grounds. “While I support more cycling, I do […]

Act now for a safer RBKC

The trees are saved. What about the people? Transport for London has listened to residents’ feedback on the proposed walking and cycling improvements for Holland Park Avenue and Notting Hill Gate. In their revised plans, only three trees will be removed (with more replanted nearby) on Notting Hill Gate.  No trees will be lost on Holland Park Avenue. Other […]

Open Letter to the Council

As residents of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, we are deeply disappointed with your decision to reject Transport for London’s (TfL) plans for safety improvements on Holland Park Avenue and Notting Hill Gate. We were hoping for safer and healthier streets. We were looking forward to crossing the roads more easily with our […]

Holland Park Avenue and Notting Hill Gate scheme axed

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has said no to plans to make Holland Park Avenue safer for all road users. They made this decision even before the consultation had finished, responding to objections from a tiny but influential minority. See the story in The Guardian TAKE ACTION Do you agree with the council’s decision? Or do […]

Wonderful to see, a couple of miles from @RBKC - one Cllr isn’t a fan of protected 🚲 lanes because they’ll be too popular & need expansion. Some others seem to think against the evidence a few quietways alone are enough. Meanwhile the rest of London & world get on with progress

Chris Woods@chrisjwoods

This is why we need more high quality cycling infrastructure in London. Lots, lots more. For huge numbers it’s simply the best way to get around. @Westminster_LCC @willnorman @CleanAirLondon

It's a glorious day. Such a shame @rbkc made cycling along Kensington High Street so hazardous. Meanwhile elsewhere in our capital safe cycling is booming. Time for our borough to make some steps to meeting their goal of being leaders in active travel https://betterstreets4kc.org.uk/campaigns/high-street-kensington/

By contrast ... here's two people on bicycles on #KensingtonHighStreet dodging buses and vehicles parked on yellow lines, where @RBKC ripped out the cycle lane.

💥Boom💥 New data: In less than 12 months @MayorofLondon @tfl & @londoncouncils have built 100km of new cycle lanes & hundreds of km of quieter streets. The result? Last weekend we saw a 200%+ increase in cycling (300%+ in some places). Amazing!! Build it & they will come.🚲🚲🚲
